East Region Success for Swimmers in Sheffield

19 December 2017
SE Nationals Dec 2017 COPSThe ASA East Region had a great showing at this year’s Swim England Winter Nationals with 17 clubs making the journey north to Sheffield for five days of long course action at the infamous Ponds Forge.  In total, we had over two hundred race entries from East Region swimmers, with all six counties represented.  With no separate finals for junior swimmers, our younger athletes had to race head to head some of Britain’s best senior swimmers for places in the evenings A and B finals.  This included the likes of Team GB’s Olympic Medallists James Guy and Siobhan-Marie O’Connor.

SE Nationals Dec 2017 HATFIELDAcross the five days we had an impressive 42 spots in finals secured by East Region clubs. Medals were awarded for under 16’s and then 16 and over’s, with the East having good results in both areas.  Our juniors secured three gold, four silver and seven bronzes, with our seniors securing three silvers and five bronzes. Basildon Phoenix, City of Cambridge, Colchester, City of Peterborough, Dunmow Atlantis, Hatfield and Putteridge all posted medal-winning performances at the event.

We look ahead now to the 2018 British Championships, which take place in Edinburgh in March and serve as the main qualification opportunity for the European Championships, Youth Olympic Games and the European Junior Championships.  We offer our congratulations to all the athletes, coaches and clubs for their successes in Sheffield and we hope they all have an enjoyable Christmas.
