Swim England East Region swimmer Will Ellard has added Commonwealth Games gold to his remarkable list of achievements, setting a new Commonwealth Games record in the process.
Representing Team England at his first Commonwealth Games, Will produced a sensational performance in the men’s S14 200m freestyle to claim the gold medal and become Commonwealth champion.
The East Region swimmer delivered a world-class performance in the pool, powering to victory in a new Commonwealth Games record of 1:53.52.
The result is another major milestone in what has already been an outstanding career for Will, who continues to establish himself as one of the leading para-swimmers in the world.
The Commonwealth Games title adds to his Paralympic success at Paris 2024, where Will became S14 200m freestyle Paralympic champion and also helped Great Britain to gold in the mixed 4x100m freestyle relay. He has also enjoyed major success at World and European Championships, collecting numerous medals and titles on the international stage.
Will’s journey to the Commonwealth Games podium began in the East Region. He started his swimming career with Beccles Kingfishers Swimming Club, before moving to Saint Felix School and, more recently, Norwich Swan Swimming Club. He has progressed through the swimming pathway to become a regular member of the British international para-swimming team, training at the Manchester Performance Centre alongside some of the country’s leading swimmers.
Will’s performance is also a wonderful achievement for the East Region swimming community and provides inspiration to swimmers across the region, demonstrating what can be achieved through talent, determination, hard work and the support of clubs and coaches.
