The first ASA East Region Junior Challenge Cup was held in Watford on 6th September. After two earlier preliminary tournaments, the top 4 teams fought it out for the Trophy—Basildon, Deben, Cambridge and Watford.
The first match saw Deben take on Watford, and the Suffolk team could find no way back after being down at 0-4 in the first quarter. In a battling game, Watford came out as 9-1 winners. The second game matched up Cambridge and Basildon. Scoring ran evenly all through the game and all four quarters were tight. With the score 6-5 to Cambridge at the start of the final quarter, the Essex team started to take command as Cambridge tired, and scored three goals to Cambridge’s one, winning the game 8-7
The third place play off went to Cambridge with a score of 13-2 over a Deben side that have only been playing Water Polo for about a year.
The final, between Watford and Basildon, was another close game. Watford led 3-2 at half time but the Basildon players showed immense resilience to keep pressing and only led for the first time in the game with under 2 minutes on the clock, eventually coming out as 8-6 winners.
