Andrew Hunter from Berkhamstead made an Olympic Final at his first Games, in the Men's 4 x 200m Freestyle Relay.
Hunter, who is a member of Berkhamstead Barracudas but trains in Stirling in Scotland, competed in the heats and final of the relay, contributing on both occasions to new British Record times. They finished second in their heat to qualify fourth fastest for the final. The team comprising David Carry, Hunter, Robbie Renwick and Ross Davenport lowered the British record again in the final, but competition was tight for the bronze place between Team GB, Australia, Canada and Italy. Despite knocking a further two seconds off the British record, the team finished sixth overall in 7:05.92.
Richard Charlesworth from Hatfield SC competed in the 1500m Freestyle, and in an event where a 14:50 swim wasn't good enough for a place in the final, Charlesworth's 15:27.17 placed him in twenty fifth overall.
“I always knew that it was going to be hard with the four guys in the middle [Davies (GBR), Prilukov (RUS), Cochrane (CAN) and Park (KOR)], and would be a fast race, I knew I had to go fast. It’s my first Olympic Games, I wasn’t really sure what to expect, I’m not overly happy with my time but it’s about experience,” concluded Charlesworth.
