The second day of the European Junior Championships saw Anne Bochmann continue her impressive start with her second gold medal and Christopher Walker-Hebborn fight off tough Russian competition to take his first gold of the competition.
Bochmann (UEA City of Norwich) showed her promise at the beginning of the season at the British Championships in April where she reached finals against senior athletes aiming to make the Olympic team.
Today, she swam to another excellent victory in the girls 400m Freestyle with an impressive time of 4:12.51 lowering her personal best time for the second time that day.
The race saw Bochmann battling against Netherland’s Sharon van Rouwendaal, and Margaux Fabre (France) for the lead in the final 100m and it was Bochmann that touched first to seal her victory.
Van Rouwendaal won the silver medal in a time of 4:12.53 and Fabre claimed the bronze medal in 4:12.60.
The boys 100m Backstroke saw Walker-Hebborn swim impressively to win his gold medal. The 17-year-old has had a promising season and broke his personal best time in this evening’s final.
The Offshore Centre swimmer, who is competing at his second European Junior Championships, showed how far he has come in the past year with a storming victory ahead of Russia’s Artem Dubovskoy.
Walker-Hebborn went one step better than the bronze he won in the same event at the World Junior Championships just three weeks ago. He touched home first in a time of 55.44 to win gold and lower his own British Age Group record. Dubovskoy took silver in 55.58. The bronze medal was claimed by Vitaly Borisov (Russia) in 56.07.
